FASESA Inspired Future Generations Through the “Exploring Near-Earth Objects (NEOs)” Workshop at Stellenbosch University

Stellenbosch, South Africa, On May 9, 2025, the Future African Space Explorer’s STEM Academy (FASESA) will host the highly anticipated “Exploring Near-Earth Objects (NEOs)” workshop at Stellenbosch University. This ground-breaking event aims to spark interest in space exploration among students, educators, and enthusiasts while providing a platform to deepen knowledge about asteroids, comets, and other celestial phenomena.

The one-day workshop offers participants a unique opportunity to learn about NEOs, their significance to astronomy, and their impact on planetary defence. Through interactive sessions, participants will engage in telescope observations, sky mapping, and even designing hypothetical space missions. Distinguished guest Dr. Avi Loeb, renowned astrophysicist and Harvard professor, will deliver a keynote address, while leading scientists, such as Caitlin Shearer, Schalk Kruger, and Dr. Nicolas Erasmus, will share their expertise.

FASESA, a non-profit organization, was founded to promote space exploration in South Africa and across the continent. By focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, FASESA empowers African youth to pursue careers in space science and technology. Through initiatives like the NEO workshop, FASESA continues its mission to position Africa as a leader in the global space economy.

The workshop promises to be an inspiring journey, combining education with creativity. From hands-on telescope usage to creative sessions on NEO-themed art and literature, attendees will leave with newfound knowledge and a sense of wonder about our universe.

The Future African Space Explorer’s STEM Academy (FASESA) is dedicated to growing Africa’s space exploration landscape through STEM education and youth empowerment. With a vision to elevate Africa’s technological achievements, FASESA has spearheaded numerous educational programs, such as the successful STEM and space exploration initiatives across Tanzania, Nigeria, and Ethiopia, impacting over 300 students.

The event brought together global leaders, experts, and students to deepen understanding and spark dialogue around Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) and planetary defence.

A keynote address was delivered by renowned astrophysicist Dr. Avi Loeb, who underscored the critical importance of continued research into NEOs and the broader implications for planetary safety and scientific advancement.

We were honoured to welcome distinguished guests from NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office within the Planetary Science Division at Mary W. Jackson NASA Headquarters:

  • Dr. Lindley N. Johnson, Planetary Defense Officer Emeritus
  • Dr. Kelly E. Fast, Acting Planetary Defense Officer

Their joint presentation offered a comprehensive overview of NASA’s efforts in planetary defence, highlighting detection, tracking, and mitigation strategies for hazardous asteroids and comets.

Representing the international policy perspective, Ms. Romana Kofler, Programme Officer in the Committee, Policy and Legal Affairs Section of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), delivered an insightful presentation titled “Why Do We Need International Collaboration When Dealing with Asteroids and Their Potential Hazard to Our Planet, and What Is Being Done at the International Level, at the UN.” Her talk emphasized the significance of global cooperation and outlined the mechanisms and initiatives currently underway at the United Nations level.
